The King of Monsters Continues to Roar

Legendary Godzilla by Matthew Petz

Godzilla the king of the monsters has greatly grown in international stature in the 63 years since its first appearance. Earlier this year, there is a bit of sadness with the passing of the actor Haruo Nakajima who initially brought life to Godzilla.

But the loss had no negative impact on the mythical legend. In fact, Godzilla continues to roar and his latest incarnation appeared just today. Yes, today!

The first in a trilogy, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters just had its theatrical release in its homeland of Japan and will be under distribution via Netflix. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, however, is not the first animated adaptation since Godzilla already appeared in an animated series.

It is rather the first animated film and also the 32nd film in the movie franchise. It is produced by Toho and set in a somehow post-apocalyptic year of 2048. The film evolves on a survival-of-the-fittest kind of story and of course, there is no better way to tell it without Godzilla’s existence.

Here are the upcoming screen appearances or sequels to look forward to:

  • Godzilla: The City Mechanized for the Final Battle – The second film in the trilogy, scheduled to be released in May 2018 and set to feature Mechagodzilla.
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters – The sequel to 2014’s Godzilla and scheduled to be released in March 22, 2019.
  • Godzilla vs. Kong – Set for a May 29, 2020 release date.
